The Arizona Diamondbacks are facing yet another potential injury setback. Left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was removed from Sunday’s game after the third inning due to tightness in his left hamstring.
During the top of the third, Gurriel made an impressive play by scaling the bullpen fence to prevent a hit from Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper. Although he seemed fine at the time, even staying in the game and leading off the bottom of the inning with a base hit, he did not return for the fourth inning. Corbin Carroll replaced him in the outfield, and the extent of Gurriel’s injury remains unclear.

This injury comes on the heels of other recent scares for the D-backs. In Saturday’s game, Ketel Marte left with a left ankle contusion after a collision at second base, and pitcher Zac Gallen was pulled due to cramps. Fortunately, both players have indicated they should be ready to return soon. However, the team is already dealing with the absences of Christian Walker, sidelined with an oblique strain, and Gabriel Moreno, out with a left abductor strain.
Despite these challenges, the D-backs have shown remarkable resilience. Recent additions and call-ups have stepped up in key moments. Josh Bell, acquired at the trade deadline, has been on fire with a .293 average, four homers, and seven RBIs in just 10 games. Rookie catcher Adrian Del Castillo has also made an impact, batting .583 and hitting a walk-off homer on Friday night. Additionally, Kevin Newman has filled in admirably for Marte, making stellar defensive plays and contributing offensively with two doubles, a single, and a walk in Sunday’s game.
The Diamondbacks have demonstrated all season that they can overcome adversity, and while Gurriel’s injury is concerning, the team’s depth and determination suggest they will find a way to adapt if needed.
