Today marks the first day that signings and trades from the NBA offseason can become official. Transactions, including traded draft rights, player swaps, and sign-and-trades from the negotiation window, are now being announced.
The Dallas Mavericks have officially announced a trade with the Detroit Pistons, sending Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks in exchange for Quentin Grimes. This move relieves around $12 million in salary for the Mavericks to allocate elsewhere. The three second-round picks involved are a 2025 Toronto pick, a 2028 Miami Heat pick, and the least favorable pick in 2028 between the Charlotte Hornets and LA Clippers.
Grimes will wear No. 5 with the Mavericks, a number previously worn by Tyler Dorsey, head coach Jason Kidd during his first stint with the team, and former All-Star Josh Howard.

The Pistons acquired Grimes in a trade that sent Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks to the New York Knicks at the trade deadline. Grimes only played six games for Detroit due to a lingering knee issue, but the Mavericks are hopeful he can return to his Knicks form, where he averaged 8.6 PPG and shot 37.9% from three-point range. If healthy, he would be a valuable addition to the Mavericks’ rotation as a strong defender.
Additionally, the Mavericks might announce the acquisitions of Klay Thompson and Naji Marshall today. While there were rumors of expanding the trade with Detroit to involve up to five teams, including Klay Thompson, the Mavericks kept it as initially reported.
