The Dallas Mavericks finalized their roster by adding Spencer Dinwiddie to their last available spot. Dinwiddie, a former Mavericks player, returns to the team after a year and a half away. He opted to sign with the Mavericks instead of rejoining the Los Angeles Lakers, as reported by Shams Charania.
“This is a significant acquisition for the Mavericks, especially this late in the offseason. Dinwiddie has already proven he can complement Luka Doncic effectively,” Charania noted. “The Lakers were also interested in his services but faced roster constraints with their 15-player limit.”
The Lakers’ offseason has been marked by challenges in making roster space for new signings and attracting top-tier talent to their team.
Earlier this summer, Klay Thompson turned down a more lucrative offer from the Lakers to join the Mavericks. Additionally, the Lakers missed out on signings like Buddy Hield and Gary Trent Jr., who opted for other teams. Their pursuit of DeMar DeRozan also fell short, and now Dinwiddie has also chosen the Mavericks.
However, Dinwiddie’s departure from the Lakers may not heavily impact them, as he had a limited impact last season, primarily playing out of position and averaging modest statistics over 28 games.
In contrast, Dinwiddie returns to the Mavericks where he is expected to play a crucial role off the bench, similar to his contribution during their 2022 Western Conference Finals run.
Earlier in 2024, Dinwiddie had a choice between the Lakers and Mavericks during the buyout market, initially opting for the Lakers. Nonetheless, he has come to realize the Mavericks offer a better fit for him, having previously enjoyed success with the team, averaging impressive numbers during his tenure there.
Looking ahead, Dinwiddie aims to seamlessly integrate into a Mavericks squad featuring familiar faces like coach Jason Kidd and star player Luka Doncic, confident that he can contribute effectively to their system once again.
