LeBron James is urging the Los Angeles Lakers to make significant roster moves, giving the team a one-week deadline. In the wake of the 2024 NBA Draft, James is pushing for action to enhance the team before it’s too late. According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, James has issued an ultimatum to the Lakers’ front office.
“LeBron is giving the front office a week,” said Haynes. “The Lakers have had exploratory talks with Portland about Jerami Grant. I expect they will make a significant move.”
The Lakers had high ambitions this summer to upgrade their roster around James and Anthony Davis. Drafting young talents like Dalton Knecht and Bronny James was just the beginning, with the focus shifting to free agency for acquiring a marquee player.

One of the primary targets was 4-time champion Klay Thompson, whose experience and shooting prowess would have complemented the Lakers’ star duo perfectly. Despite their efforts, Thompson was lured away by the Dallas Mavericks, signing a three-year, $50 million deal. The Lakers also missed out on Paul George, who agreed to terms with the Philadelphia 76ers.
With several missed opportunities, James is now waiting to see the Lakers’ next move before deciding on his own contract. James, 39, declined a $51 million player option to become a free agent. Despite averaging 25.7 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.3 rebounds per game on 54% shooting last season, indicating his elite status, the Lakers need additional support to compensate for his gradual decline.
James is open to taking a pay cut, but only if the Lakers can add a significant role player to the roster. If they can’t meet this condition within a week, James will opt for the maximum salary available, aiming to play alongside his son.
Although the Lakers haven’t made a major move yet, there is still time. With players like Jerami Grant and DeMar DeRozan
reportedly available, the Lakers could still make the impactful acquisition fans are anticipating.
If the Lakers fail to make any substantial additions, tension could rise behind the scenes, putting GM Rob Pelinka under immense pressure to improve the roster. It’s clear that James is committed to winning now and is pushing the Lakers to seize the opportunity to make a crucial addition.
