Before the news of Albies’ injury, there was already a strong case for a trade between the Angels and Braves involving Rengifo. While Atlanta’s shortstop Orlando Arcia is highly regarded for his defense, his offensive performance in 2024 has been poor. Rengifo, despite not being a standout defender, has had a solid offensive season, which could be appealing to a Braves team that has had unexpected trouble scoring runs this year.
With Albies out for most of the second half, the Braves may be even more inclined to make a trade to strengthen their infield. They recently signed Whit Merrifield for depth and called up prospect Nacho Alvarez to fill the gap, but neither has proven to be a reliable contributor in the major leagues this season. Additionally, Merrifield was injured during warmups on Monday.
