The Boston Red Sox are likely to face significant changes in the near future.
With only a few weeks left in the 2024 MLB regular season, the team is still in the hunt for an American League Wild Card spot. However, the odds aren’t in their favor. With just 10 games remaining and four games out of a playoff position, Boston’s postseason chances are slim. Although not entirely out of contention, time is running out, and it appears the Red Sox may miss the playoffs for the second consecutive year. This offseason, the organization will need to make difficult decisions about player signings and departures.

FanSided’s Cody Williams has speculated that one such decision could involve parting ways with starting pitcher Nick Pivetta for the 2025 season.
“On the surface, veteran Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta’s numbers don’t look terrible, with a 4.37 ERA and 1.13 WHIP at 31 years old, though his 5-11 record leaves much to be desired,” Williams said. “But any Red Sox fan knows that doesn’t fully capture the Pivetta experience. He can pitch eight shutout innings one night and then be pulled before the second inning the next. His inconsistency isn’t just game-to-game, it can fluctuate from inning to inning. How often have fans seen him deliver three dominant innings, only to give up home runs to the next two batters?”
Boston did make strides with pitchers like Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello, and Kutter Crawford, even with their own ups and downs, but Pivetta hasn’t shown much improvement. At 31, he seems unlikely to change, and it appears his future with the team is uncertain.
