The Yankees have released left-handed reliever Chasen Shreve from his minor league contract, as reported by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Additionally, New York announced that they have reinstated right-hander Nick Burdi from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To make room for Burdi on the 40-man roster, the Yankees transferred Cody Poteet to the 60-day IL.
Shreve, who signed with the Yankees in late June, made 10 appearances for Scranton, where he performed decently by allowing three earned runs over 11 innings. Despite his overall effective performance, including striking out 11 batters and walking only three, the Yankees decided not to promote him to the major league level. This decision came even though the Yankees traded away Caleb Ferguson and did not acquire another left-handed reliever at the trade deadline.
The 34-year-old Shreve has not played in the major leagues this season, splitting his time between the Triple-A affiliates of the Rangers and Yankees. Last year, he appeared in 50 MLB games for Detroit and Cincinnati, recording a 4.63 ERA with slightly above-average strikeout and walk rates over 44 2/3 innings.
This week, New York bolstered their bullpen by adding right-handers Mark Leiter Jr. and Enyel De Los Santos. Currently, Tim Hill is the only left-handed reliever in their bullpen, with Anthony Misiewicz and Josh Maciejewski assigned to Triple-A.
Burdi, who is now heading to Scranton, has been cleared to play after spending over two months recovering from a right hip injury. Despite a challenging career marked by injuries, Burdi remains an intriguing prospect with a fastball averaging around 98 MPH. This season, he has pitched 9 2/3 innings for New York, allowing just two runs and setting a personal record with 12 MLB appearances.
Poteet’s transfer to the 60-day IL is retroactive to June 15, making him eligible to return in the second week of August. He has not yet started a minor league rehab assignment due to a triceps injury. Earlier this year, Poteet started four games and posted a 2.14 ERA over 21 innings.
