DONE DEAL: Chelsea hijack a deal to sign £37.8m player after he is linked with Newcastle

Chelsea are advancing well in negotiations to sign a player who has also attracted interest from Newcastle

The Blues have been active this summer, acquiring players such as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Omari Kellyman, Renato Veiga, Caleb Wiley, Marc Guiu, and Tosin Adarabioyo for manager Enzo Maresca.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have reached personal terms with Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal. The trusted Italian journalist mentions that Chelsea are eager to finalize the deal quickly to avoid losing the Dane to other clubs. The transfer appears imminent as Jorgensen has recently followed Chelsea on Instagram.

This development follows a report from Spanish journalist Nacho Sanchis, who noted that Newcastle had considered Jorgensen to compete with Nick Pope next season. However, that position seems to have been filled with the signing of Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest.

The Athletic reports that Chelsea and Villarreal are still negotiating the fee for Jorgensen, who has a €45m (£37.8m) release clause but is expected to cost around €20m to €25m (£16.8m to £21m) due to Villarreal’s need for a significant sale this summer.

Chelsea’s recruitment strategy appears somewhat disjointed. Last summer, the club spent £25m on Robert Sanchez and another £14m on Djordje Petrovic from New England Revolution. With Kepa Arrizabalaga returning from his loan at Real Madrid, Chelsea’s goalkeeping department is overcrowded. Currently, six goalkeepers are listed on Chelsea’s official website, including Marcus Bettinelli, Lucas Bergstrom, and Eddie Beach. It would be wise for Chelsea to offload one or two goalkeepers before finalizing Jorgensen’s signing to avoid an excessively large squad in that area.
