Leicester City are reportedly in negotiations with Ajax over the potential transfer of Dutch international winger Steven Bergwijn, according to sources from the Netherlands.
Leicester is looking to bolster their attacking options, and former Tottenham player Bergwijn has recently emerged as a target. De Telegraaf reports that discussions between Leicester and Ajax have been ongoing for several days as they try to agree on a transfer fee.
Ajax is seeking upwards of €20m (£17m) for Bergwijn and has already rejected a €15m (£13m) bid from MLS side Atlanta United. However, Ajax is aware that if their demands are too high, Leicester may withdraw from the deal.
Ajax is willing to sell Bergwijn to address their financial needs, considering him one of their most valuable players and highest earners. Bergwijn joined Ajax from Tottenham two years ago and has scored 29 goals in 76 appearances for the club.
During his two-and-a-half seasons at Tottenham, Bergwijn struggled to become a key player. His standout moment came at the King Power Stadium, where he scored twice in injury time to secure a dramatic victory against Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City.
Capable of playing on both wings and occasionally in the center, Bergwijn matches the profile Leicester is looking for, providing competition for Stephy Mavididi and Abdul Fatawu. Last season at Ajax, he primarily played on the left wing, often cutting in onto his preferred right foot.
The 26-year-old was also part of the Dutch squad that reached the Euro 2024 semi-finals. He made two appearances, starting on the right in their last-16 and quarter-final matches against Romania and Turkey.
