There’s no official news on a Mitch Marner trade, but that doesn’t mean discussions aren’t happening behind the scenes.
Many in the NHL believe the Toronto Maple Leafs might trade their star forward this offseason rather than offer him a high-value contract extension or risk losing him to free agency next year. NHL Network’s Stu Grimson is among those speculating on this possibility.
On a recent episode of “NHL Tonight,” Grimson discussed why trading a player like Marner might be difficult but could ultimately benefit the team.
“This group needs more toughness and grit in their top six,” Grimson said. “…Looking back at the Florida series, the Leafs struggled with players like Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett, who are integral to the Panthers’ top six. Toronto covets that kind of gritty presence that can also deliver top-end offensive numbers. Marner might be the piece they trade to add that necessary element management believes will push them over the top.”
Marner, who has scored 85 or more points in four of the last six years, including three 90-point seasons, has one year left on his contract with a $10.9 million cap hit. His next contract could likely exceed $11 million per year.
At 27, Marner could command a substantial return on the trade market, especially from a Stanley Cup-contending team looking to strengthen their scoring depth. Grimson suggests this potential return could be very tempting for Toronto.
“If they trade him, it will be a haul,” Grimson added. “I expect there will be a solid, established impact player involved, along with a mix of picks and prospects. The return should be significant.”
