One potential NBA trade proposal has the Los Angeles Lakers sending Rui Hachimura to the Utah Jazz in exchange for guard Collin Sexton.
For the Lakers to make a significant offseason move, it will likely come from the trade market. Isaac Gutierrez from Bleacher Report has compiled a list of possible trade targets for the Lakers in the upcoming weeks, with Utah Jazz guard Collin Sexton being a notable name.
Sexton, known for his speed, could be a feasible target given the Jazz’s surplus of guards. Gutierrez suggests that a trade package involving a 2029 first-round pick and Rui Hachimura might be sufficient to acquire Sexton.

“I believe the Lakers need another creator on the bench who can serve as a backup point guard,” Gutierrez explained during a July 24, 2024, live stream. “At some point, they might trade D’Angelo Russell. Collin Sexton would be an ideal fit alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.”
**Collin Sexton’s Contract Details**
Sexton is currently on a four-year, $70.9 million contract with two seasons remaining, including an $18.3 million cap hit for 2024-25. In contrast, Hachimura is on a three-year, $51 million deal, with a $17 million cap hit for the same season.
**Could Collin Sexton Start for the Lakers?**
Despite being mentioned as a backup guard in Gutierrez’s proposal, Sexton has proven his capability as a starter. Last season, he played 78 games for Utah, starting in 51 of them. Throughout his six-year NBA career, Sexton has started 274 games, averaging 18.7 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game while shooting 39.4% from three-point range. This makes him a compelling option as a starting point guard over D’Angelo Russell.
While it’s uncertain if the Lakers will be able to finalize a trade, The Athletic’s Jovan Buha remains skeptical about a blockbuster deal, noting the Lakers may not have enough assets for a player like Lauri Markkanen.
According to Michael Scotto from HoopsHype, there is speculation that the Jazz might explore trades for Sexton, especially after selecting two guards in the first round of the 2024 NBA draft, including Isaiah Collier from USC.
“Rival executives who spoke with HoopsHype believe that guards Collin Sexton and Jordan Clarkson could become available on the trade market,” Scotto reported in a June 15 article.
As the Lakers explore their options, the potential addition of Collin Sexton could significantly bolster their roster for the upcoming season.
