DONE DEAL: Newcastle Lands £40m Trade

Newcastle United are preparing to enter fresh contract negotiations with Anthony Gordon following summer transfer interest from Liverpool.

Gordon, who represented England at Euro 2024, will return from his pre-season holiday next week. The 23-year-old winger was linked with a move back to Merseyside, with his boyhood club Liverpool showing interest.

After joining Newcastle from Everton for £45 million in January 2022, Gordon was named the club’s player of the season for the 2023-24 campaign and earned his first senior England call-ups. Newcastle is eager to reward Gordon for his impressive performance last season, where he contributed 12 goals and 11 assists, according to The Athletic.

Former Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley expressed concerns in June about potentially having to sell Gordon to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules. Instead, the club sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for a combined £68 million.

Mail Online reports that Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales proposed a £120 million deal involving Gordon joining Liverpool for £75 million and defender Joe Gomez moving to Newcastle for £45 million. However, manager Eddie Howe dismissed suggestions that Liverpool’s interest had unsettled Gordon, stating, “He’s an integral part of what we’re doing. I’m confident he is okay and has been fully committed to Newcastle.”

Liverpool has yet to make a senior signing this summer, while Newcastle is in talks with Crystal Palace over a potential move for centre-back Marc Guehi. The Magpies have already signed Lloyd Kelly, Lewis Hall, John Ruddy, and Odysseas Vlachodimos, and agreed to a £15 million deal with Sheffield United for Will Osula.
