Throughout the summer, the Blues have been eager to bring back the Manchester City midfielder after his successful loan spell at Fratton Park last season, which was cut short by a hamstring injury.
On Saturday, head coach John Mousinho informed The News that Pompey were still pursuing the young Australia international, despite increasing confidence from Championship rivals Cardiff City that their interest in the 21-year-old would yield results.
Now, it seems Cardiff’s optimism was well-founded, as BBC Wales reports that the Australian is close to joining Erol Bulut’s side, making him the fifth signing of the summer. A deal worth up to £3 million has reportedly been agreed with Manchester City, who Robertson joined at the age of 15. The formalities of the transfer are expected to be finalized following a medical examination scheduled for today.
This development is a significant setback for the Blues, who are keen to strengthen their midfield ahead of their Championship return. Pompey had shown interest in Australian midfielder Aiden O’Neill earlier in the transfer window, and reports last week indicated they were also eyeing South Korean international Jeong Ho-yeong. Currently, Owen Moxon and Tom Lowery are vying to play alongside Marlon Pack in the Blues’ midfield for Saturday’s Championship opener against Leeds United.
