Sheffield United-linked winger Matt Ritchie has signed with Championship newcomers Portsmouth after being released by Newcastle United.
The 34-year-old became a free agent at the end of the season, ending his eight-year tenure with Newcastle. While there were reports of Sheffield United making an offer to the experienced wideman, Ritchie has chosen to return to Portsmouth, a club he previously played for.
After signing, Ritchie expressed his excitement: “It’s a dream come true. I’ve always felt I had unfinished business at this football club. I love the club, as we all do. I’m really excited for the challenge we’ve got, but also excited for the personal challenge and I’m delighted that I’m back. This club has always held a special place in my heart.”
Ritchie began his career at Fratton Park but struggled to secure a regular first-team spot. He moved to Swindon Town in 2011, which marked the start of his rise. Subsequent moves to AFC Bournemouth and Newcastle followed, with the former Scotland international boasting two Championship titles.
Portsmouth boss John Mousinho commented: “Everyone knows what Matt brings, having had a fantastic Premier League career. I’m sure our fans have followed his incredible progress and are pleased by his achievements. It’s a transfer that’s been anticipated for a long time, and it’s amazing we’ve made it happen. Along with his top-flight experience, Matt also has substantial Championship experience, having been promoted from the league twice.
