Sunderland have lost out on signing young goalkeeper Conal McDermott, with Championship rivals Portsmouth securing the deal for the promising talent. The Black Cats had shown interest in the Derry City star, but their pursuit was thwarted when McDermott signed a scholarship deal with Portsmouth last week. The 17-year-old had previously spent an eight-day trial at the south coast club during pre-season. Although McDermott has been training with Portsmouth since Monday, he is unable to play competitively for his new club until he receives international clearance from FIFA, which also prevents him from participating in academy matches until approval is granted.
