Could the Boston Red Sox make a move to strengthen their starting rotation this offseason? It wouldn’t be shocking.
While Boston is currently in contention for an American League Wild Card spot, there’s still room for improvement. The Red Sox bolstered their rotation by acquiring James Paxton before the trade deadline, but the team will need to reassess their pitching staff once the season concludes.

The Red Sox are expected to welcome back Lucas Giolito in 2025, but that likely won’t be their only move. Boston is expected to pursue additional starting pitchers, and one name that could resurface is Chicago Cubs’ Jameson Taillon. According to Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer, Taillon, who was mentioned in trade rumors before the deadline, might be a potential trade target for Boston in 2025.
“Contract Status: Year 2 of a 4-year, $68 million deal,” Rymer noted. “Though the Cubs didn’t approach Taillon, who has a 10-team no-trade clause, about any deals, his name was circulating before the deadline. It would make sense for the Cubs to consider trading him this winter, especially with their depth in the rotation for 2025.”
Taillon might not be a marquee player, but he could provide valuable depth to Boston’s rotation. While a trade didn’t materialize this summer, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Red Sox and Cubs revisit discussions in the offseason.
