Several key players from the Boston Red Sox are set to hit free agency this winter, and one of the most prominent names on that list is star closer Kenley Jansen.
Despite an inconsistent 2024 season for the Red Sox, Jansen has been a reliable presence in their bullpen. Over the past two seasons, he has delivered exactly what the team hoped for, but uncertainty surrounds his future in Boston.

Jansen’s current contract will expire at the end of the season, making him a free agent. There were rumors of a potential trade involving him last offseason, but the Red Sox chose to keep him, hoping to make a playoff push. In 51 appearances this season, Jansen has posted a solid 3.48 ERA and recorded 26 saves, underscoring his value to the team.
However, it remains unclear if the Red Sox will retain Jansen for 2025. The team already has another top-tier closer, Liam Hendriks, who is expected to take on a prominent role next year. Jansen is projected to command a contract in the range of four years and $72 million, according to Spotrac.
Although bringing Jansen back would be a significant boost, Boston may hesitate at that price, particularly when they have another closer in place. Additionally, Jansen has expressed a desire to compete for a World Series, leaving open the possibility of his departure in search of a team with stronger championship aspirations. While he hasn’t ruled out a return to Boston, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him sign with another contender.
If Jansen’s time with the Red Sox is coming to an end, he has certainly made a strong impact during his tenure. Unfortunately, the team hasn’t been able to provide him with the success he hoped for during his time in Boston.
