GOOD NEWS: NHRA Legend John Force Leaves Intensive Care

John Force, the 75-year-old, 16-time Funny Car champion, has transitioned from neuro-intensive care to acute neuro care following a severe crash nearly two weeks ago at the Virginia NHRA Nationals. The accident left him with a traumatic brain injury, a fractured sternum, and a right wrist injury.

Force was racing at a speed of 300 mph when his Camaro SS Funny Car exploded and crashed into a concrete wall at Virginia Motorsports Park near Richmond on June 23. At the time of the accident, Force was in second place in the NHRA season points and enjoying one of his best seasons since his last championship win in 2013.

A statement from John Force Racing, released on Saturday, provided an update on his condition:

“The latest progress in John Force’s recovery has been a relief to his family, who have stayed by his side since the accident. However, medical experts caution that the road to recovery will be long and arduous. Force is still experiencing cognitive and behavioral symptoms from his traumatic brain injury, but his ability to communicate with medical staff, family, and John Force Racing president Robert Hight, who visited this week, is a positive sign. Nonetheless, he continues to have episodes of confusion, which require time and patience to manage.

“Encouragingly, Force has regained enough balance to begin walking with assistance from medical staff. The next phase of his recovery is expected to involve a move to a long-term care facility that specializes in treating traumatic brain injuries and related symptoms. The timeline for this transition is yet to be determined.”
