Green Day Take Dig at Will Smith’s Alleged AI Audience Video: “Don’t Need AI For Our Crowds”

Green Day have thrown a sly jab at Hollywood star Will Smith after a viral video allegedly showing the actor performing to an AI-generated audience sparked heated debate online.

During their recent show in Los Angeles, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong paused between songs to address the controversy that’s been making the rounds on social media. Without naming Smith directly at first, Armstrong quipped:

“At least we don’t need AI for our crowds.”

The crowd roared in approval as Armstrong leaned into the mic, adding:

“Every scream you hear tonight is 100% human. We don’t do bots. We don’t do fake claps. This is the real deal.”

The remark comes after a clip began circulating last week that appeared to show Will Smith performing on stage to what many users claimed was a digitally generated audience. While some defended the video as an experimental blend of entertainment and AI technology, others criticized it as “soulless” and “deceptive.”

Green Day, who have built their reputation on raw energy and authentic punk spirit since the early ’90s, clearly saw the moment as an opportunity to underline their commitment to live connection. The band’s comment has since been widely shared online, with fans praising their refusal to compromise the concert experience.

One fan on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “Green Day proving once again why they’re legends — nothing beats the real thing.”

Neither Will Smith nor his representatives have publicly addressed the authenticity of the AI audience claims, though the debate continues to stir across music and film circles.

For Green Day, however, the message was clear: rock and roll doesn’t need digital stand-ins to fill the room.
