Novak Djokovic shared a heartfelt message to his homeland after clinching gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. On Sunday, August 4, the World No. 2 triumphed over Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz with a score of 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) in the final held at Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Djokovic, born in 1987 in Belgrade, Serbia, has now represented his country in five Olympic Games. His victory in Paris marks his second time on the Olympic podium, following a bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. On Tuesday, Djokovic posted a video on social media showcasing his early days in tennis, his role as Serbia’s flag bearer at the 2012 London Olympics, and highlights from his final match against Alcaraz. In the video’s caption, he expressed deep gratitude to his fellow Serbians for their support and dedicated the gold medal to them:
“I could never give up on the dream of winning this gold medal, just as the people of Serbia have never given up on me. Together, we believed in the impossible. While I may be the one holding this medal, I want every Serbian to know that it belongs to all of us. Representing our nation is the greatest honor in the world. This medal, these moments, this life—none of it would have been possible without your unwavering support. This is because of you. This is for you. Hvala vam Love, Nole.”
Djokovic’s victory was historic, placing him among an elite group of tennis players who have achieved the “Golden Slam” — winning all four Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold. He joins Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams as the latest to complete this remarkable feat.
