JUST IN: Chicago Cubs are open to considering trade proposals for their star pitcher, Justin Steele.

The Chicago Cubs are reportedly shifting toward a selling strategy as next week’s MLB trade deadline approaches. This change in approach follows the Cubs losing four of their last six games, placing them at 48-53 for the season and trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by 10 games in the National League Central.
If the Cubs decide to fully embrace a fire sale, several notable players might become available. These include second baseman Nico Hoerner and outfielder Ian Happ.
On the pitching side, Jameson Taillon and Héctor Neris are potential trade candidates for teams in contention.
However, the most significant name in potential trade talks is standout starting pitcher Justin Steele. According to Patrick Mooney, Ken Rosenthal, and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Cubs might entertain offers for Steele.
“Unless the Cubs somehow get creative and become opportunistic. Most front offices use those buzzwords at this time of year, and the Cubs remain in listening mode,” the insiders reported. “Though the asking price would surely be astronomical, those conversations could theoretically include offers for standout left-hander Justin Steele.”
Steele, 29, would immediately rank alongside Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal and Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox as one of the top starters available before the July 30 MLB trade deadline.
This season, Steele has a 3.07 ERA and 1.02 WHIP, with nearly a strikeout per inning. In 2023, he recorded a 16-5 record with a 3.06 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. Steele has been consistently impressive since his debut with the Cubs in 2021.
