Ange Postecoglou is actively seeking new attacking options to strengthen his squad ahead of the new Premier League season, with a high priority on finding a striker to replace Harry Kane.
While Hutton acknowledges that a move for the “technically gifted” 30-year-old might be financially appealing to Tottenham, he doubts Depay’s ability to consistently perform in the Premier League this season.
“He’s always been a good player,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News. “Even when he joined Manchester United, he came with a lot of hype, and I was really looking forward to seeing him, but he was somewhat disappointing.
“I could be completely wrong here, but I wonder if off-the-field issues affect him. When he joins the Dutch squad, you expect him to shine, and while he does show flashes of brilliance, I think he often falls short of expectations.
“I’m not convinced the Premier League suits him; I don’t think he has the pace to consistently outpace defenders. Yes, he has moments of brilliance and undeniable technical skill, but maintaining that high level week in and week out is questionable, as evidenced by his frequent transfers. He’s played for big clubs, but he’s always moved on, which leaves me uncertain about him.”
