Frankie Montas, the newest addition to the Milwaukee Brewers’ pitching rotation, expressed surprise at being traded despite his recent struggles on the mound. Montas had endured a tough stretch with the Cincinnati Reds, surrendering 16 runs in 16 innings over his last three starts. Nevertheless, the Brewers saw potential in him and acquired him at the trade deadline, hoping to bolster their rotation with a seasoned pitcher.
Montas, 31, is eager to join the Brewers, who are vying for their second consecutive division title. He is expected to make his debut on Friday against Washington. The Brewers’ president of baseball operations, Matt Arnold, praised Montas’ pedigree, noting his postseason experience and ability to fill a crucial need in the rotation.
To make room for Montas, the Brewers demoted left-hander Tyler Jay to Triple-A Nashville. Montas joins Aaron Civale, another recent acquisition, in reinforcing the Brewers’ rotation. Civale has had a mixed start with Milwaukee, going 0-1 with a 4.29 ERA in four starts.
Montas brings a wealth of experience, having served as the Reds’ Opening Day starter and compiling a 4-8 record with a 5.01 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 93 1/3 innings. Despite his recent struggles, the Brewers believe Montas can provide stability and depth to their rotation, which has been a concern all season.
