JUST IN: LeBron James Signs contract extension after Team Draft

In a historic move, NBA legend LeBron James has re-signed with the Los Angeles Lakers just days after the team selected his son, Bronny James, with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that James agreed to a two-year max contract worth $104 million, which includes a no-trade clause and a player option for next season. This deal ensures James’ return for his 22nd season in the league and paves the way for the first father-son duo in NBA history to play together.

There have been several instances of NBA players following in their fathers’ footsteps, but never before have a father and son shared the court at the same time.

Bronny’s Journey to the NBA

Bronny James, a top high school prospect, chose to attend the University of Southern California, where his college career was marked by highs and lows, including a cardiac arrest incident that sidelined him for much of his freshman season. Despite this setback, Bronny declared for the NBA Draft earlier this year.

During his introductory press conference with the Lakers, Bronny expressed his excitement about the unexpected opportunity to play alongside his father. “I never really had a thought of, you know, me going to play with my dad, but that’s always there to, you know, take part of,” he said. “But that wasn’t a main focus of mine.”

LeBron’s Legendary Career

LeBron James, who will turn 40 later this year, is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with over 40,000 points. He has secured four NBA championships—two with the Miami Heat, one with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and one in 2020 with the Lakers.

This new contract not only highlights LeBron’s enduring talent and influence in the league but also sets the stage for a historic season with the potential for the James family to make NBA history.
