JUST IN: Reds to ‘surprise’ fans with possible trade deadline approach

The Cincinnati Reds are navigating a unique situation ahead of the 2024 MLB trade deadline. Despite being built around young, controllable players, they find themselves just five games back from the third wild card spot in the National League. This positioning makes them conservative buyers, rather than sellers. However, MLB insider Jim Bowden suggests the Reds could surprise fans with a “buyer-to-buyer” trade, where they leverage their valuable relievers to acquire assets that enhance their playoff push.

The Reds’ bullpen boasts attractive trade chips, including Nick Martinez, Buck Farmer, Lucas Sims, and Justin Wilson, who could garner significant interest from contenders. Additionally, Frankie Montas is another name to watch if the Reds decide to sell. By moving these relievers, the Reds could secure substantial returns, given the high demand for bullpen arms this season.

Bowden’s proposed “buyer-to-buyer” strategy involves the Reds trading their relievers to another contender in exchange for assets that bolster their lineup or rotation. This approach would allow the Reds to strengthen their playoff chances while maintaining their core of young, controllable players. The recent trade between the Phillies and Orioles, where Philadelphia acquired Austin Hays in exchange for Cristian Pache and Seranthony Dominguez, serves as an example of this type of deal. By adopting a similar strategy, the Reds could make a surprising move that enhances their postseason prospects.
