LAKERS NEWS: JJ Redick Shares His Reasons for Accepting LA Head Coaching Position

During an introductory press conference, JJ Redick explained his decision to leave a successful career as a podcaster and ESPN analyst and commentator to take on the challenging role of an NBA head coach, especially for the league’s prestigious franchise.

“Sitting in this seat, I know what the expectations are…and the expectation is a championship,” Redick stated, according to Dan Woike of The Los Angeles Times.

Redick expressed gratitude towards team president Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss for the opportunity.

“One of the things that kept coming up … gratitude. I think that’s where I’ll start, feeling so grateful for Rob, Jeanie, the entire Lakers organization for entrusting me in this position. I take this responsibility very seriously,” Redick added, as reported by Mike Trudell of Lakers.com.

Redick enjoyed a 15-year playing career as a sharpshooting combo guard, following a successful stint with the Duke Blue Devils. He played for the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans, and Dallas Mavericks.

Though he finished in the top 15 among Sixth Man of the Year vote-recipients twice, Redick did not receive many accolades during his playing career, nor did he win a title. However, his knowledge of the game and tactical expertise, showcased on his various podcasts (including “Mind The Game” with Los Angeles All-NBA star forward LeBron James) and broadcasts, hold promise despite his limited coaching experience.
