Lakers Persistently Associated with Ex-Top 10 Draft Pick Guard

As the Los Angeles Lakers continue their offseason activities, the front office faces the task of refining the roster. Although the Lakers currently have a full roster, it’s expected that around four players will be off the team by the start of training camp.

To make any additions to the team, Los Angeles needs to free up both salary and roster space. This will likely involve a trade, but so far, the Lakers have been cautious about making moves just for the sake of it.

This summer, the Lakers have been linked to various players, with one name repeatedly emerging: Utah Jazz point guard Collin Sexton. Utah is considering moving the young guard, and the Lakers could be a suitable destination for him.

In a video, Bleacher Report’s Isaac Gutierrez discussed potential targets for the Lakers, mentioning Sexton once again.

“I think they [the Lakers] essentially need another creator on the bench that can be basically a backup point guard,” Gutierrez explained during a live stream on July 24, 2024. “I think at some point they’re going to trade D’Angelo Russell…The first name I have on this list [of backup point guard trade targets] is somebody who I have been preaching to the choir, telling everybody in the world that will listen. They need to get Collin Sexton on this Lakers team. Collin Sexton is the perfect young guard to play off of LeBron James and Anthony Davis as a tertiary option.”

The Lakers’ intention to move on from guard D’Angelo Russell isn’t new, and it’s anticipated that he will be traded eventually. Swapping Russell for Sexton might be a lateral move, but fresh talent could benefit the team.

Sexton, who averaged 18.7 points last season, is a strong scorer. Pairing him with Anthony Davis and LeBron James could enhance the Lakers’ chances in the upcoming season.
