Portsmouth, Matt Ritchie transfer reunion hailed

Portsmouth have secured the signing of Matt Ritchie ahead of the upcoming Championship season.

The 34-year-old originally came through Portsmouth’s academy before making his senior debut, but he left Fratton Park for Swindon Town in 2011 after an initial loan spell at the County Ground.

Since his departure, Ritchie has gained significant experience in both the Premier League and Championship, playing key roles in helping Bournemouth and Newcastle United achieve promotion to the top tier. However, after leaving Newcastle earlier this summer when his contract expired, he found himself without a team for the new season. This led to his return to Portsmouth, where he aims to help John Mousinho’s squad establish themselves in the Championship following their promotion from League One.

Portsmouth fan pundit Miltos Ioannidis from Football League World believes that Ritchie’s return is an exciting addition for the club. He highlighted the valuable qualities Ritchie brings, both on and off the pitch.

“I’m thrilled about Matt’s signing,” Ioannidis shared with Football League World. “It was a completely unexpected move, and beyond just the football aspect and his connection to Pompey, he brings a wealth of experience, not only at this level but also from the Premier League. With over 180 Premier League appearances and two promotions from this level with Bournemouth and Newcastle, he’s a natural leader on and off the field.”

“These are invaluable traits that shouldn’t be overlooked, and I fully expect him to play a key role in our season. He’ll be essential in our effort to solidify our position as a Championship team.”

“Much like the signing of Marlon Pack a couple of years ago, which worked out brilliantly, Ritchie is ready to contribute and help take this club to the next level. I’m absolutely buzzing and can’t wait to see what Matt will bring to Portsmouth.”
