REPORT: Celtics Looking to Bring in 11-Year Head Coach After Charles Lee’s Departure

The Boston Celtics are gearing up for the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks, but they also have other important matters to address.

After the series concludes, the Celtics will shift their focus to preparing for the 2024-25 season, particularly dealing with the departure of Charles Lee, who will be coaching the Charlotte Hornets next season.

Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports that the Celtics are considering adding Jeff Van Gundy to Joe Mazzulla’s coaching staff for the next season. Van Gundy was hired by Boston in October as a senior consultant in basketball operations, working closely with Brad Stevens.

Before joining the Celtics, Van Gundy spent 11 seasons as a head coach for the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets, achieving a 430-318 record. For the past 16 years, he has been a well-known basketball analyst for ESPN.

Van Gundy’s strong relationship with Celtics president Brad Stevens is a significant factor in his anticipated integration into the coaching staff. Stevens praised Van Gundy’s contributions in April, emphasizing his positive impact on the team and their player development efforts.

With Van Gundy’s extensive experience and successful track record, his addition to the Celtics’ coaching staff would be a valuable asset as the team aims to compete for NBA championships in the upcoming seasons.
