Report: Former FSU Quarterback Chris Weinke Receives Raise and Extension

Former Florida State star quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke led the Seminoles to their first wire-to-wire season in 1999 and their second National Title. With standout performances alongside FSU legends like Peter Warrick, Anquan Boldin, Ron Dugans, and Snoop Minnis, Weinke threw for 3,103 yards and 25 touchdowns as the Seminoles triumphed over Virginia Tech for the national title in his junior year.

In 2000, Weinke won the Heisman Trophy and was subsequently drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft. His NFL career included stints with the Panthers and the 49ers. After retiring from playing, Weinke transitioned to coaching, with roles at the St. Louis/LA Rams, Alabama, and Tennessee before joining the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Chad Bishop of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Weinke has secured a contract extension with Georgia Tech, ensuring his stay in Atlanta for the foreseeable future and bringing a substantial salary increase.

“Weinke, entering his third season with the Yellow Jackets, is now under contract through January 31, 2026. His original contract, which began on January 1, 2023, was set to expire on January 31, 2025,” the report stated. “Weinke’s base salary has increased from $600,000 to $700,000, and starting February 1, his annual salary will rise to $750,000.”

Weinke’s coaching expertise includes mentoring players such as Nick Foles, Case Keenum, Jared Goff, Jalen Hurts, and Tua Tagovailoa. He now serves as Georgia Tech’s Assistant Head Coach, Quarterbacks Coach, and Co-Offensive Coordinator, working with star quarterback Haynes King.

FSU will face Georgia Tech in Week 0 of the 2024 season on August 24. Weinke will be on the opposing sideline when the teams clash in Dublin, Ireland.
