Report: Powell River RCMP Issues Warning to Dirt Bike Riders

Residents in the qathet region may have recently noticed the loud buzz of dirt bike engines on public roads. This noise is not just an annoyance; it signifies a growing problem.

The Powell River RCMP have reported an increasing number of incidents involving youth dangerously driving off-road vehicles on public roads and trails. In response, they have issued a strict warning to all off-road vehicle operators and their parents.

The RCMP emphasized that they will be rigorously enforcing the Motor Vehicle Act and the Off Road Vehicle Act in the coming months. There will be zero tolerance for off-road vehicles on public roadways and for dangerous driving behaviors.

To legally operate an off-road vehicle on or across public roads, highways, or forest service roads, drivers must:

– Obtain ICBC insurance
– Hold a valid driver’s license
– Drive safely

Furthermore, all off-road vehicle operators must carry identification and present it to police upon request. Violations will be reported to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), potentially impacting the driver’s future ability to acquire a license and insurance.

The RCMP also warned that non-compliance could result in the seizure of the vehicle.

Anyone witnessing a breach of the Motor Vehicle Act or Off Road Vehicle Act is urged to contact the Powell River RCMP at 604-485-6255.
