REPORT: Red Sox Lands Bid For Dodgers’ Starting Pitcher

The Boston Red Sox, just one game shy of a playoff position after 100 games in the 2024 season, are looking to bolster their roster as the MLB trade deadline approaches.

With the deadline roughly a week away, Boston’s window to make impactful moves is closing. According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have engaged in discussions with the Los Angeles Dodgers regarding starting pitcher James Paxton, who has been designated for assignment.

Paxton, a 35-year-old left-hander, spent the past two seasons with the Red Sox, including the entire 2022 season recovering from an injury. In his 19 starts for Boston, he posted a 4.50 ERA and a 1.313 WHIP. This season, his performance has been similar, with a 4.43 ERA and a 1.455 WHIP over 18 starts.

If Paxton clears waivers, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow will have the chance to trade for the veteran, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the year. Adding a consistent and capable pitcher to the rotation could significantly boost the Red Sox’s postseason prospects.
