Report: Tottenham suffers another transfer setback

Tottenham Hotspur’s efforts to sign Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey have hit a snag. The 23-year-old, who had an injury-disrupted season, remains a player of interest for Spurs. Despite previous links and renewed interest, reports of a formal bid are inaccurate.

Head coach Ange Postecoglou admires Ramsey, who still has three years left on his contract with Villa. Tottenham’s interest persists despite his injuries, and they’ve inquired about his availability this month. However, Villa is hesitant to sell. Speculation arose that Financial Fair Play (FFP) and Premier League Profit & Sustainability Rules might force Villa to offload Ramsey and others like Jhon Duran, linked to Chelsea.

The PSR allows clubs a maximum loss of £105 million over three years, with deductions for infrastructure, women’s teams, academies, and community initiatives. Financial analyst Swiss Ramble estimated Villa still needed over £50 million in player sales to meet these regulations by the end of the current fiscal year.

Villa’s pending £43 million sale of Douglas Luiz to Juventus, alongside a separate £18.5 million deal involving Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea coming from Turin, helps address their financial requirements. Additionally, selling academy graduates like Tim Iroegbunam to Everton for £9 million and Omari Kellyman to Chelsea for £19 million counts as pure profit, raising £28 million.

Further deals, such as signing Ian Maatsen from Chelsea for £37.5 million and Lewis Dobbin from Everton for £10 million, contribute to a healthier financial outlook for Villa, ensuring compliance with PSR without needing to sell Ramsey.

Consequently, Tottenham’s chances of acquiring Ramsey this transfer window seem slim, given Villa’s strengthened financial position and reluctance to sell.
