The Golden State Warriors have faced a turbulent 24 hours, losing veteran point guard Chris Paul in free agency and preparing for the possible departure of star shooter Klay Thompson. Their efforts to secure a trade for Paul George also fell through, adding to the frustrations of GM Mike Dunleavy.
Potential Changes Ahead

However, things might be looking up soon. If the Warriors proceed with a sign-and-trade deal for Thompson, they could gain valuable assets to rebuild their roster. With the Dallas Mavericks emerging as strong contenders to acquire Thompson, the Warriors are eyeing a return package that includes 23-year-old Josh Green, who recently signed a three-year, $41 million contract starting at $12.6 million annually. To make the trade work, the Warriors might also absorb the $4 million contract of center Dwight Powell.
Thompson’s Future
Thompson is set to meet with the Mavericks, Clippers, Lakers, and Sixers this week to explore his options. Seeking a four-year deal that exceeds the mid-level exception ($12.9 million), Thompson requires a sign-and-trade agreement to secure his desired salary. Apart from financial considerations, Thompson is also looking for a winning team. The Mavericks, with stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, and coming off an NBA Finals appearance, seem to be a favorable destination.
Chris Haynes of TNT highlighted the Mavericks as the frontrunners, noting Thompson’s potential fit with their offensive scheme. “He can be a guy that fits in well with Kyrie and Luka,” Haynes said, adding that Thompson’s movement could invigorate the Mavericks’ somewhat stagnant offense.
End of an Era
Thompson, a five-time All-Star, has spent his entire 13-year career with the Warriors, forming the iconic “Splash Brothers” duo with Stephen Curry and contributing to four NBA championships. However, at 34, he’s coming off his least productive season since his rookie year, averaging 17.9 points and 3.3 rebounds, with shooting percentages of 43.2% from the field and 38.7% from the three-point line.
A New Beginning
Acquiring Josh Green could provide the Warriors with a solid two-way player to join their young core, including Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, Brandin Podziemski, and Trayce Jackson-Davis. Green averaged 8.2 points last season, with impressive shooting percentages of 47.9% from the field and 38.5% from beyond the arc, making him a promising addition to the team.
