An eight-time MLB All-Star is currently away from his team to care for his 3-year-old son.
Chelsea Freeman, wife of Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, shared on social media that their son Maximus has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder.
Freeman has been placed on the family emergency list and has missed the last four games for LA. The family reported that Maximus experienced a rapid decline and full-body paralysis last week before his diagnosis.
Guillain-Barré syndrome, as described by the Mayo Clinic, involves the body’s immune system attacking the nerves, leading to weakness, numbness, or paralysis. While there is no known cure, most people eventually recover completely.
“These have been the hardest and scariest days of our lives,” Chelsea shared on social media. “Maximus is such a special boy and he has been fighting SO hard.”
