Former NBA star Carmelo Anthony recently shared an intriguing anecdote about Kobe Bryant’s strong aversion towards JJ Redick during Team USA tryouts in 2008. Anthony, speaking on his “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast, revealed that Bryant was notably determined to shut down Redick in practice sessions, driven by what he perceived as excessive praise from Coach Mike Krzyzewski.
“I remember Kobe couldn’t stand JJ Redick,” Anthony recalled vividly. “It became personal. Kobe was relentless in practice—running through screens, denying Redick the ball, and playing him tough. It was intense to witness.”
Anthony described how Bryant’s frustration stemmed from Coach K’s frequent commendations of Redick’s skills, which seemed to irk Bryant to no end. “Kobe took it very, very personal,” Anthony emphasized. “He would foul JJ hard, and you could see how much it bothered him.”

Despite Bryant’s competitive drive against Redick, the Duke standout did not ultimately make the 2008 USA Olympic team. Now, years later, Redick finds himself in a different role, set to coach the Lakers in the upcoming season.
Reflecting on Bryant’s legacy and competitiveness, Anthony speculated that the Lakers legend might have viewed Redick’s coaching appointment differently today. “With the competitive angle removed, Kobe might have been more supportive of Redick’s coaching role,” Anthony mused. “But back then, it was clear how strongly he felt.”
Anthony’s story provides a fascinating glimpse into Bryant’s fierce determination and how personal rivalries and competitive spirit shaped his approach to the game both on and off the court.
