Reports surfaced over the weekend that Dallas was considering several players for their final roster spot, including Spencer Dinwiddie, Dennis Smith Jr., and Talen Horton-Tucker. It appeared likely that a reunion was in the works, and now it seems Dinwiddie will be returning to the Mavericks.
It’s not surprising that Dinwiddie and Dallas might team up again. After being bought out by Toronto last season, Dinwiddie was deciding between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Mavericks for a postseason run. He chose the Lakers, a decision that didn’t pay off in terms of a deep playoff run.
Now, it appears both Dinwiddie and Dallas have moved past that decision, demonstrating how short-term memories can be in the league when winning is the priority. Adding Dinwiddie will bolster Dallas’s playmaking off the bench.
Dallas already has Jaden Hardy, who showed potential in the playoffs and is expected to improve, and Dante Exum, who had a solid season but fell out of the playoff rotation. With Dinwiddie, Dallas ensures they have a guard capable of leading the offense from the second unit.
In his previous stint with Dallas in 2022, Dinwiddie delivered memorable moments, such as his buzzer-beater against the Brooklyn Nets and a game-winner against the Celtics. If he can replicate his performance from Dallas’s unexpected Western Conference Finals run in 2022, he’ll be a valuable addition to a team that is now a solid contender.
