Tottenham Hotspur is set to announce the signing of 16-year-old striker George Feeney from Glentoran. Spurs have successfully outbid several Premier League rivals to secure the highly-touted young talent for their academy.
Rising Star
George Feeney, son of former Northern Ireland international Warren Feeney, became Glentoran’s youngest goalscorer last October, netting a superb goal at just 15 years old during the BetMcLean Cup first-round victory against Dollingstown. His remarkable talent has made him a hot prospect, sparking interest from both the Northern Ireland and Wales football associations.
Competition and Signing Details
According to football.london, Tottenham outmaneuvered clubs like Brighton, Brentford, West Ham, Crystal Palace, and Nottingham Forest to sign Feeney. The transfer deal includes add-ons to benefit Glentoran in the future. Feeney, who recently turned 16, will join Tottenham’s academy next week and will be part of the new intake of academy scholars, which the club usually announces in early July.
Family Legacy and International Ambitions
Feeney hails from a family with a rich footballing history. His father, Warren Feeney, played for Bournemouth, Luton, and Northern Ireland. George has already represented both Northern Ireland and Wales at the U16 level and has played for Northern Ireland’s U17 team. Both countries are keen to include him in their future plans.
If he continues his ascent, George Feeney could become the fourth generation of his family to play international football, following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather Warren Sr., and great-grandfather Jim.
Academy and Coaching
Feeney will join Tottenham’s U18 side, coached by Stuart Lewis, Bradley Allen, and Jermain Defoe. Interestingly, Defoe, a former England striker, played alongside Warren Feeney at Bournemouth in 2001. Defoe’s experience and guidance will be invaluable to young George as he aims to make his mark in football.
In the latest episode of “Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham,” Spurs correspondents Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest discussed Feeney’s signing and the ongoing search for a first-team striker for manager Ange Postecoglou, along with other club news.
